DELAY NOMINATED FOR TWO W.C. HANDY AWARDS
- The Memphis-based Blues Foundation in 1999 nominated Oregon harmonica
ace Paul deLay for two WC Handy Awards--best harmonica, and best song ("Fourteen
Dollars in the Bank" from Nice
& Strong). deLay became only the third Northwest bluesman,
joining Robert Cray and Kelly Joe Phelps, to be nominated for the award,
the blues world's equivalent of the Grammy. The Glendora MS Harmonica Summit,
in which deLay participated, was also nominated for a Handy "Keeping
The Blues Alive" award. (Complete
list of 1999 nominees).
- And in a related development, longtime Paul deLay Band guitarist and
manger, Peter Dammann, was the 2001 recipient of the Blues Foundation's
"Keeping the Blues Alive Award" as Blues Promoter of the Year
for his work as Talent Coordinator for the annual Waterfront Blues Festival
in Portland, Oregon. The event, the major annual fundraiser for the Oregon
Food Bank, last year drew crowds totalling 125,000 to the five day, three-stage
festival, raising $300,000 and a record 110,000 pounds of food for the
hunger relief agency.
