9TH ANNUAL D-DAY COMMEMORATIVE BARBECUE
OREGON CASCADE CHAPTER: 101ST AIRBORNE DIVISION ASSOCIATION, SANDY, OREGON

In past years the Airborne Historical Association has traditionally attended this event in a support capacity for the Oregon Military Museum. 2001 marks the first time that we have been formally invited to attend as 3/505th PIR (AHA). Three members; Sam kimpton, Gerald Peterson, and Ryan Stubbins attended. Our display consisted of inspection layouts featureing T-5 and T-7 parachute assemblies and was augmented by an A-5 Aerial Delivery container complete with G-1 cargo chute container and crash-pad provided by collector and Oregon Cascade Chapter historian Robin Bartel.
A large number of veterans, predominately 101st AB but including 11th AB and 509th PIB personell, were in attendance. Personall vignettes related to matters from conversing with Eisenhower on D-1, to the reputation of the 82nd, as provided by Don Malarkey, within the 101st, were the norm. This was an excellent event and ranks among the most enjoyable of the year.

The Citation awarded to 3/505th PIR (AHA)
by the 101st Airborne Division Association's Oregon Cascade Chapter
for our efforts in helping out at their barbecue in 1999, 2000, and 2001.

A nice aspect of presenting at veterans functions is
the camraderie shown by the vets to members of the Airborne Historical Association.
Our presentation usually differs from that given for the general public as these men
are "insiders" and already know the ropes with respect to their equipment and
history.

Frequently the guys assume the role of the teachers and much is learned from them. One
such gentleman isDarvin L. Lee, LMP HQ Co., 3/506th PIR. This image is of him and was
made in July 1944 after the Normandy Invasion.

Another image of Darvin Lee on the right running with a buddy in Marlborough, England Prior to Normandy.
