For a long time, the Bouvier des Flandres was a rare breed in the United States. However, in the past few decades, people have become increasingly interested in this noble and stable-tempered breed of European origin. Its qualities of intelligence, courage, stability, and loyalty have become more and more desirable to educated dog owners.
Yet.... popularity exacts a certain price. Proof is the unfortunate fact of Bouvier Rescue organizations dealing with unwanted animals in Pounds and Humane Societies. Whether it was from poor quality from opportunistic breeders, or simply Bouviers given away because the owners could no longer handle the size or expense, it is a sad effect of potential owners not understanding the breed.
