Steve Teich's Specialty Sites
My idiosyncratic collection of sites oriented around particular topics or areas of practice.
Family Practice
- Merck Manual, 17 ed.
- Full text and searchable.
- Dr. Rose's Peripheral Brain
- An interesting assemblage of information from textbooks, lectures, articles, and other reliable sources of information on clinical diagnosis and care.
- Family Practice Notebook
- Compliments of Scott Moses, MD. Useful information on diagnosis and management of common problems in family practice.
- A Family Physician's Web Starter
- Straightforward organization of clinical sites makes it easy to find what you're looking for. Links are usefully annotated and exceedingly well chosen. Also covers non-medical topics.
- AAFP Online
- Home of the American Association of Family Physicians. Full-text access to American Family Physician and other AAFP publications. CME credit available to AAFP members. Excellent collection of patient handouts. Excellent collection of links to other Web sites.
- Primary Care Clinical Practice Guidelines
- A superb effort; don't be fooled by its plain appearance. Links to clinical practice guidelines from several sources, including the American College of Physicians and the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research. Check out the Resources link for a well-rounded, selective collection of sites. Cross-cultural section may be of particular interest.
- Martindale's Virtual Clinical - Primary Care Center
- As with the other Martindale sites, a whole lotta stuff without a whole lotta order. Lots of general reference tools. Look under the "Medical Center" link for some useful resources and a comprehensible organization. A good site for multimedia, teaching oriented materials.
Nursing
- Nursing Sites on the Web
- Well selected, so it's not the largest collection of links you'll find. Some helpful annotations. Absolutely no-nonsense, so it's easy to use. From the State University of New York at Buffalo.
- NurseWeek/HealthWeek
- Excellent news coverage, plus links to job listings, CNE, full-text articles. Can be slow to load. Not as well organized as one would wish.
- NMAP
- Stands for Nursing, Midwifery and Allied health Professions. A quick and easy gateway to quality WWW resources. From the University of Nottingham.
- allnurses.com
- Great for news, bulletin board discussions, links to lots of sites. It looks like you can store your nursing bookmarks/favorites there, too.
- Nurse's PDR Resource Center
- Online companion to Delmar's PDR Nurse's Handbook. Includes dosage, contraindications, interactions, side effects, action/kinetics, and special concerns.
Administration
Rx
- Martindale's Virtual Pharmacy Center
- Probably the most comprehensive pharmacy site on the Web. Covers pharmacy, pharmacology, toxicology, medicinal plants, associations, and on and on. As with the other Martindale centers, there's lots of interesting general reference stuff, too.
- RxMed
- Drug monographs and more, including patient information and links to organizations, for the primary care physician.
- RxList
- Extensive monographs for 200 drugs, targeted to health professionals.
Does not include nursing considerations. Search by generic or brand names.
- MedWatch
- The FDA's site for current reports on drugs, devices, and nutritional products.
- PharmWeb
- A potentially useful all-around site for pharmacists. International in scope, with links to organizations, government agencies, and schools. Sponsors several discussion lists. Use the pull-down menu at the top to navigate if you want to avoid new browser windows each time you click on a link.
Pediatrics
- eMedicine
- An online textbook for pediatrics. Check out eMedicine's home page for other online texts.
- PedsCCM
- Washington University's webste for pediatric critical care medicine. Not laid out all that well, but lots of info. Journal articles, plus links to other pediatric sites and discussion lists.
- Martindale's Virtual Obstetrics, Pediatrics & Gynecology Center
- Typical Martindale. Loads of general reference materials mixed in with some useful clinical resources in a difficult-to-figure-out-much-less-predict-what-you'll-find hash. Worth checking for the teaching oriented resources.
Emergency Medicine
- eMedicine
- An online textbook for emergency medicine. Check out eMedicine's home page for other online texts.
- NCEMI - National Center for Emergency Medicine Infomatics
- An archive of clinical tools, including acute care scoring systems, (e.g., the Alvarado appendicitis score, the Glasgow coma scale, the NIH stroke scale), calculators, acronym translators, charts and diagrams. Sometimes slow to load, but wonderfully easy to use.
PDAs

Patient Education/Consumer Health
- OHSU Library Consumer Health Resources Center
- Links to lots of high quality sites. Be sure to check out Patient Education Resources for Clinicians (the famous "blue page") for Spanish language and low-literacy sites.
- NLM MEDLINEplus
- The National Library of Medicine's innovative site for the lay public. Health professionals will also find it useful. Carefully selected links to reputable sources of information. "Health Topics" makes it easy to search Medline for information on many illnesses and conditions without keying in search terms. Includes links to Spanish language resources. Easy to navigate.
- Healthfinder
- Another worthwhile consumer health site, this one is from DHHS. Yes, NLM is part of DHHS. And yes, Healthfinder and MEDLINEplus share the same target audience. No, I don't know why they can't make do with a single site. But at least they did a good job with it.
- NOAH
- New York Online Access to Health. An excellent source for basic consumer health information. Bilingual - English and Spanish.
- Columbia University Complete Home Medical Guide
- Full text, including illustrations. Easy to use, authoritative. Appendices includes precautions, interactions, and other information about commonly prescribed drugs.
- InteliHealth
- Good all-around consumer health site. Links to news, Medline, nutrition database, drug and disease info. Reasonably fast, but its busy layout may be confusing
- Medem Medical Library
- Another site with carefully screened sources, this time mainly from medical societies and government sources. Within subject areas, information grouped by complexity. Uneven coverage and sometimes very slow.
- Patient Education at Ohio State University Medical Center
- Collection of patient education/consumer health pamphlets on a variety of topics. Easy to use, but you'll need Adobe Acrobat Reader to read these PDF files.
Public Health & Infectious Disease
Other
- Internet Mental Health
- The most comprehensive mental health site on the Net. Information on disorders includes diagnosis and medications, links to useful resources, patient education materials.
- Dr. Bob's Mental Health Links
- Sort of the .org version of Internet Mental Health. That means it's messier, less glitzy, wider ranging, and more fun. Check out the "virtual enpsychlopedia" and its link to psychopharmacology tips for information on drugs/conditions. Alas, the link to Dr. Bob's truly amazing web sampler no longer seems to work.
- Dr. Ivan's Depression Central
- Lots of information on lots of mood disorders, including major depression, manic-depression (bipolar disorder), cyclothymia, dysthymia and others. A true labor of love.
- Neuroland
- Outstanding resource for neurological resources. Includes disease notes, drug information, other links of interest.
- Neuromuscular Disease Center

- Orthogate
- The most comprehensive orthopedic site out there. Separate pages for orthopods, GPs, residents, students, and patients. Use it to find images, mail lists, research material, literature, meetings, as well as specific orthopedic topics. Excellent coverage of international resources. Use your browser to enlarge the font before you get too excited.
- Wheeless' Textbook of Orthopaedics

Easy to use.
- Martindale's Virtual Dental Center
- A substantial dental site. Links to reference tools, teaching files, literature, dental anatomy and genetic information, and more. Quirky organization makes it more difficult than necessary to find things. As with the other Martindale centers, there's lots of interesting general reference stuff, too.
- Alternative Medicine Home Page
