Sleigh Bells --Treats

 

 

Make no mistake: Brooklyn duo Sleigh Bells is loud, raucous and unapologetic. Members Alexis Krauss (vocals) and Derek Miller (guitarist/programmer) prove it on debut album "Treats," from the hard-hitting drum machine and soaring guitar riff of opener "Tell 'Em" to the frantic, punk energy of "Straight A's." On the distortion-heavy "A/B Machines," Krauss' repeated vocal chant ("Got my A machines on the table/Got my B machines in the drawer") is no match for Miller's sweltering guitar, and "Crown on the Ground" is stomping noise-pop poised to define the band's sound. Elsewhere, songs like "Riot Rhythm" and the M.I.A.-flavored "Kids" (Sleigh Bells is signed to the artist's N.E.E.T. Recordings) suffocate the listener with hip-shaking beats and buzzing distortion. But the track "Rill Rill" leaves room to breathe--Krauss' voice is unusually sweet over easygoing guitar and slow-jam snaps. --Lindsey Fortier, Billboard.com

Blitzen Trapper --Destroyer of the Void

 

Cheers to Portland's Blitzen Trapper for opening their fifth full-length, Destroyer of the Void, with the album's almost proggy title track. "Destroyer of the Void" ambitiously steamrolls over decades of canonical popular music, squishing it into an epic suite that gathers Beatles harmonies, sci-fi synths, classic rock guitars, country-rock twang, and AOR sentimentality into one big, ballsy package. It's a surprising and precarious way to kick off an album, especially the follow-up to 2008's Furr, on which Blitzen Trapper stuck primarily to Laurel Canyon folk-rock. Coming on the heels of their more chameleonic and ramshackle breakout LP, Wild Mountain Nation, Furr narrowed Blitzen Trapper's expansive sonic scope. And so it wouldn't be wrong for fans to expect that Destroyer would be even more tightly focused and single-minded in its commitment to honeyed, loose-limbed jams.

The rest of the album is more expected-- full of haunting songs doused in harmonicas, saloon pianos, and dusty guitars. Unlike many of their contemporaries doing the bearded-70s-folk-rocker thing, Blitzen Trapper's influences lie less with hippie-ish CSNY or the Grateful Dead and more with the rugged late-60s roots-rock of Bob Dylan and the Band. Blitzen Trapper's version of Americana is one of the most melodic and playful (and least affectedly twangy) since Being There-era Wilco, and Eric Earley uses his craggy Dylanesque voice to add grit to his more featherweight melodies.

Tom Petty --Mojo

Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers have always been a rock'n'roll band. But Mojo, a mostly blues-rock opus clocking in at nearly 65 minutes, is for those who've been waiting for the long-lived group to let the throttle out all the way. Petty  and lead guitarist Mike Campbell don't restrain themselves with these arrangements, ranging from the tasteful licks of "Jefferson Jericho Blues" (about founding father Thomas Jefferson's plantation proclivities) to screaming solos on "I Should Have Known It" and the album-closing "Good Enough." Benmont Tench gets his own piano and organ spotlights on such tracks as "Running Man's Bible" and the swirling "Something Good Coming," while Petty and company cut a wide swath through Delta blues ("Takin' My Time"), reggae (the pro-pot "Don't Pull Me Over"), garage rock ("Candy") and nods to soul ("No Reason to Cry") and folk ("Something Good Coming"). It's not news that these guys rock, but on their first new album in eight years the Heartbreakers have their Mojo working like they never have before-which is a fine thing indeed.~ Billboard .com

 Herbie Hancock --The Imagine Project

Herbie Hancock's star-studded The Imagine Project was several years in the making, recorded in seven countries with musicians from all over the globe. Hancock's band with producer/bassist Larry Klein, drummer Vinnie Colaiuta, percussionist Alex Acuña, and guitarist Lionel Loueke is a common denominator. Most selections are interpretations of well-known pop, folk, and soul songs. The best things here are indeed fine. There's a gorgeous reading of Baden Powell's “Tempo de Amore” thanks to Lucas Martins' bassline and CéU's singing. “Space Captain” by the Derek Trucks-Susan Tedeschi Band --with Hancock and Colaiuta  -- brings out a much-needed soulful grit to Tedeschi's vocals, gospelized four-party harmony, and tough slide playing by Trucks. Bob Dylan's “The Times They Are a Changin'," with Lisa Hannigan's raw, emotive vocals, is underscored by interplay between the Chieftains and Toumani Diabaté's kora and Hancock's piano. The tune actually moves past its American folk revival beginnings to reflect a worldwide sentiment. “Tamatant Tilay”/”Exodus” pairs the nomad Malian guitar band Tinariwen’s  song with Bob Marley's classic. Hancock’s trio, K’NAAN, Tinariwen, and three members of Los Lobos are all featured on vocals. Tinariwen  dominates with Hancock’s funky clavinet pushing against their snaky wall of guitars and ululating singing; it's the hippest track here. Klein’s “The Song Goes On” features Anoushka Shankar, Wayne Shorter, Chaka Khan, and K.S. Chithra with some lyrics translated into Hindi for the Indian vocalists. A full-on Indian session band interacts with Shorter’s knotty soprano sax, and the only truly engaged Hancock  piano playing on the set. ~ Thom Jurek, All Music Guide

The National --High Violet

 

Brooding Brooklyn indie-rock band The National arrives at its fifth studio album, High Violet, in a precarious position. Because 2007 breakthrough set Boxer featured breathtakingly quiet arrangements and a more self-contained mood than previous efforts, a follow-up was always going to be a daunting endeavor. High Violet touches upon the same themes of aging, idealism and imperfect love, but uses the driving instrumentation of 2005 disc "Alligator" to quietly dazzle the listener. "Conversation 16" offers a bruising portrait of discontent over Bryan Devendorf's pounding drums, while the back-to-back anthems "Anyone's Ghost" and "Little Faith" form an album centerpiece worth countless listens. Singer/songwriter Matt Berninger has grown more confident and takes more risks on High Violet, resulting in a slew of hypnotizing vocal hooks. "I still owe money to the money, to the money I owe/I never thought about love, when I thought about home," the frontman sings in his baritone warble on the racing "Bloodbuzz Ohio."  Various Artists --Twistable Turnable Man: A Musical Tribute To The Songs Of Shel Silverstien

 

This all-star tribute to Silverstein's songs captures the poetry, the humor, and the pure emotion that made his catalog such a fertile source of material for other artists. Though he made a handful of album under his own name, Silverstein  was never much of a singer -- honestly, he made Kris Kristofferson sound like Conway Twitty -- so there's none of that feeling one sometimes gets from a tribute album in which no one can sing the tunes like the honoree. Of course, the best-known versions of some of these songs are pretty iconic nevertheless, but almost everything is done justice here. Naturally, no one can live up to Johnny Cash's charismatic recording of "A Boy Named Sue," but the loose-limbed vibe Todd Snider brings to the tune feels like a natural fit. Likewise, Black Francis and Joey Santiago of the Pixies attack the old Dr. Hook hit "The Cover of the Rolling Stone" with so much gleeful sonic savagery that it stands up admirably alongside the original. Bobby Bare was one of the most consistent and perfectly suited interpreters of Silverstein's material -- some of Bare's best albums were written in their entirety by Silverstein  -- but John Prine and Kris Kristofferson sound so at home in the Bare-associated "This Guitar Is for Sale" and "The Winner," respectively, that one might dare to think there are still new roads for these songs to travel. And even if your tolerance of kid-oriented tunes like "The Giving Tree" and the saccharine "Daddy What If" -- Silverstein  was, after all, a hugely successful children's author -- is limited, there are only a couple of those moments to be skipped over on an otherwise impressive collection. ~ J.
