Adele-21

Adele's 2009 debut album, 19, was a Grammy-winning smash hit that revealed the British singer/songwriter's knack for bittersweet soul and folk-infused love songs that brought to mind an infectious mix of Dusty Springfield and Terry Callier. In many ways, her sophomore album, the similarly age-appropriate-titled 21, is a continuation of the sounds and themes Adele was working with on 19.  Last time around we got the gauzy, Callier-esque folk-soul ballad "Daydreamer" to slowly draw us into the album; here, Adele immediately injects us with the propulsive gospel fever-blues anthem "Rolling in the Deep." While the track certainly owes a heavy debt to the punk-blues of Beth Ditto and the Gossip, it is also ridiculously sexy and one of the best singles of any decade. Similarly enthralling is the centerpiece of the album, the mega-ballad showstopper "Take It All." Co-written by her "Chasing Pavements" partner Francis White, the song begins with Adele proclaiming "Didn't I give it all?" Delivered starkly at first with Adele set against simple piano accompaniment and later backed by a gospel choir, it's an instant-classic sort of song in the tradition of "The Rose," "And I Am Telling You I Am Not Going," and "All by Myself" that could stand over the years as a career landmark for the singer and a cathartic moment for fans who identify with their idol's Pyrrhic lovelorn persona. The Strokes -Angles

  Clocking in at a svelte 34 minutes, Angles is as short as the band’s early albums, but it's  a different beast. Somehow, the Strokes sound more retro here than they did before, with slick production coating everything in a new wave sheen. Fabrizio Moretti's drums are more precise than ever, and Julian Casablancas' voice is blanketed in distortion that stands in sharp contrast to his pristine surroundings. Nick Valensi is Angles' star, turning in witty responses to Casablancas' vocals and dazzling solos like the one that graces “Two Kinds of Happiness”' mix of power pop and post-punk. The Strokes deliver a few quintessential moments: “Under Cover of Darkness” is an über-Strokes song, with tumbling verses that borrow “Last Night”'s melody and soaring, secretly earnest choruses; meanwhile, “Machu Picchu”'s reggae-fied strut harks back to Room on Fire. They sound even better on “Taken for a Fool,” which, with lines like “Monday, Tuesday is my weekend,” rivals their earlier songs for quotability, and on “Gratisfaction,” which plays like the perfect cross between Nick Lowe's “And So It Goes” and everything Billy Joel recorded from the late ‘70s to the early ‘80s. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi

Robbie Robertson --How To Become Clairvoyant

How to Become Clairvoyant is Robbie Robertson's first album since 1998's Contact from the Underworld of Red Boy. Despite a preponderance of guitars, this isn't a cooking session, but an uncharacteristically autobiographical song cycle that addresses not only Robertson's life and experiences, but those of his friends, heroes, and collaborators. It opens promisingly enough with the rootsy "Straight Down the Line," with rocking steel guitar solos by Robert Randolph. The meld of nocturnal guitars, synthetically funky beats, and taut yet off-kilter melody create the musical backing for "He Don't Live Here Anymore," a song that frankly discusses substance abuse and addiction. "When the Night Was Young" is a signature Robertson ballad. Though it commences with his trademark guitar sound, it tells his version of his generation's story in a laid-back way. Its lilting hook relies on country and blues; paired with 21st century production tropes, the music creates an emotional palette of longing. "This I Where I Get Off" addresses for the first time -- in song anyway -- his reason for breaking up The Band, and features fine guitar interplay between Robertson and Eric Clapton. The angular, funky, nocturnal, funky R&B in the title track is among the more subtle highlights here; it contains a head-scratcher of a melody with the best lyrics on the set, and excellent exchanges between Randolph and Robertson. How to Become Clairvoyant is an often compelling record, but it's a flawed one, too, with elements of beauty counterbalanced by bloated lyrical and production excesses.  Devotchka--100 Lovers

Devotchka's sixth studio album still relies heavily on the Eastern European-infused, heavily cinematic -- you can hear the influence of the band’s recent stints in the world of film music (Little Miss Sunshine, I Love You Philip Morris) throughout 100 Lovers' 45-minute run time -- chamber pop of past efforts, but there are some new elements at play here. IMAX-sized opener “The Alley” rolls in like a thunderous qawwali prayer, you can practically hear the strings of firecrackers bouncing around the pavement on the mariachi-drenched “Contrabanda,” and “Bad Luck Heels” flirts with Brazilian forro and goes home with Bollywood. Throughout it all, bandleader Nick Urata croons and wails and the wild percussion, seemingly random tango-fueled arpeggios, and instrumental segues pile up, which can get a little exhausting when taken straight through. It’s a melting pot to be sure, and the band has a tendency to go heavy on the atmosphere and light on the hooks, but there’s never any doubt that it’s a brew tended over by some awfully talented cooks. ~ James Christopher Monger, Rovi

Ray Davies --See My Friends

A tribute album starring the man of honor himself, who also curated the whole affair, See My Friends is a bit of a curious creature. Certainly, Ray Davies' influence is so pervasive he could rope in a number of heavy hitters from a number of different generations. Jackson Browne and Bruce Springsteen sign up for duets; Metallica backs the legend on a rip through “You Really Got Me,” while Spoon offers suitably spacy support on “See My Friends”; Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora harmonize on a languid “Celluloid Heroes,” and Black Francis comes in to sing “This Is Where I Belong,” a song he covered with gusto some 16 years earlier. As it turns out, “This Is Where I Belong” provides a good indication of the energy level of See My Friends in general: the older dudes are comfortable playing with Ray while the newer dudes are respectful, delivering amiably mannered performances. It’s all pleasant enough, but it’s hard not to wish that more of the record had the kick of “Til The End of the Day,” where the late Alex Chilton seems genuinely enthused to sing with his idol. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

Buddy Miller --The Majestic Silver Strings

Buddy Miller records as a frontman sparingly -- the last time was in 2009 with wife Julie Miller on the stellar Written in Chalk. He does far more performing and producing, the latter including Patty Griffin's Downtown Church and Robert Plant's Band of Joy offerings. For The Majestic Silver Strings, Miller recruited guitarists Bill Frisell, Marc Ribot, and Greg Leisz to join him on a program of classic country songs and a couple of originals. The four guitar players are joined variously by guest vocalists including Griffin, Julie Miller, Shawn Colvin, Emmylou Harris, Lee Ann Womack, and Ann McCrary, and the rhythm section of drummer Jay Bellerose and bassist Dennis Crouch. The program is a revisioning of tunes from country's canon that sound timeless against the original material. It is without nostalgia. The dreamy opening notes of "Cattle Call" (inextricably linked with the legendary Eddy Arnold) make it obvious that something special is unfolding. Frisell and Leisz play waltz-time intertwining leads as Ribot adds a requinto and Miller a mandoguitar through a lengthy intro before adding his grainy, crooning voice. The spunky "No Good Lover" is a swinging blues with Frisell and Ribot trading licks before McCrary duets with Miller. Lefty Frizzell's "I Want to Be with You Always" boasts gorgeous guitar slinging, but is eclipsed by the sensual vocal duet between Griffin and Miller. The reading of Roger Miller's "Dang Me" is radical: Chocolate Genius takes the vocal, making it slippery and silvery atop a spooky, swampy nocturnal blues. The Majestic Silver Strings is one of those rare "supergroup" projects that works -- as much by its understatement as its savvy choice of material and excellent performances.
